Camaro
Roberts Camaro page, what the hell..... guns and fast cars go together.
Here's the latest on the money sucking 1969 and 1970 Camaros from hell!
How did I get to this point? Well I have really no idea, like other people (who I used to laugh at) the project snowballed into a money sucking inferno of frustration and occasional highs, followed by lows comparable to the ninth ring of hell, one step forward and ten steps back somedays.
This started out as a great car that won a local show in the under construction class, a nice 70 Camaro Arctic White and sporting a strong 454, Muncie 4 speed and 10 bolt posi.
During a wash I noticed the right door was turning yellow. Cheap clear, poor prep, who knows, it just gnawed on my brain and everytime I looked at the car I saw a flaw.. So I decided to repaint the door and at the same time this bee-otch needed some Z-28 stripes in hugger orange. And this is when the journey to hell first started, with this one little step.
I first hired a guy from work (painter) to paint the car. He had photos of previous work and I had a couple recommendations. After basically ripping my car apart he let it sit for 8 months without progress. (I was doing what you see below with the subframe). Watching my pride and joy gather dust I finally had enough and removed it (good thing, he foreclosed on his house three days later, quit work and skipped town with my $1,500 deposit).
So while the project WHITE TRASH was sitting in hibernation I decide I hated the color white and was going to go to a 1969 Cortez Silver with black stripes. To do it right I needed to pull the engine, which was in the back of my head since the oil pressure was suspiciously low the last time I drove it and a horrendous vibration was getting worse and worse. At the same time I figured, "what the hell" the engine is out and I have been saving all this money for my Daughters college, why not send her to truck driving school instead and buy a new Tremek TKO 600 five speed? (I mean really.... I didn't learn all that much in college ;-) and I have six years to replentish the college fund.
This is where my new ulcer started, upon the recommendation of a friend (ex after this, just kidding I still associate with him I just randomly punch him when we meet) I go to Steely Performance in East Moline Illinois. Now I don't want to brag but I am the perfect customer when it comes to my car. I am patient, understand speed costs money and I want to go fast. I rarely haggle and I want the best of everything on my vehicle. I want no shortcuts and I will not bug you.
Therefore I walked in and said (this is a quote), " I want 500 horse on pump gas, if it looks bad replace it, call me if you find anything out of the ordinary, do you want a deposit, when will it be done"
They answer "there are three motors in front of yours, no deposit required should be three weeks, we will call you, looking at $1500 bucks max without headwork", I said this was fine I would throw on a set of Edlelbrock Victor heads myself.
I wait a month with no calls, I leave two messages, a week goes by I call again and they tell me they disassembled, cleaned, blasted, pressure tested, magnafluxed and everything was ready for work, no cracks.. They tell me the motor was recently rebuilt but someone put a 427 flywheel on and it was not balanced correctly (hence the massive vibration eating my main bearings away and loosing pressure) they were going to bore it to 468, throw in TRW forged pistons, grind the crank, put in a hot cam, balance and offered to go through my existing heads for an additional $300.00 (the total for you guy not calculating is $1800.00) Again I say great, do you want a deposit, when will it be done? (see a pattern here yet?)
They answer: "Give us a month"..... Whatever, the car was still in an "auto-cocoon" (Better off dead, gotta love it) I am ok with it.
I am having a busy life so I end up calling after about two months and get the answering machine, a week goes by no call back, I call again and get answering machine. I am getting pissed after I am on month four and my engine is in limbo land, I drive down there. Some dude tells me the owners is ill and been in the hospital with some type of cancer, feeling like a tool I cut em some slack and calm down and ask what the deal is, he responds they are 'putting my engine on final hone right this week, next engine up"
Another month goes by no calls and no return call after I leave a message. A week later they call and tell me my crank was cracked and I need to buy a new crank. Furious at least five months ago I paid for Magnaflux and the crank was fine, I drive down and tell them I am pulling all of my stuff out settle the bill and give me my broken crank. They can not produce the broken crank or the Pro Dampner that was on it. My stuff is in three locations in the shop and the owner comes out and tries to make it right, saying he will supply a new donor crank. I tell them I am fed up, this is the last chance and I want an idea of where we are at on time and price. They say $1800 out the door because they found a great deal on a complete rotating kit, pistons, cam blah blah blah...... they tell me 30 days (Kinda like the Shirk brothers in The Money Pit, "two weeks")
Two months go by no call, I leave a message, two days later they call and tell me the bill is $3500 I can come pick up my engine. I blast them on the phone, call my lawyer and tell him to drop the hammer. By sheer chance a friend calls looking for a big block for his Impala, twenty minutes later I am at another friends (Oger) who is struggling putting a fresh 468 in his 69 Camaro and wanting to go back to a built small block. I pick the new 468 up for 2k and tell the other guy "pay the bill at Steely and its yours."
NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THESE JACKASSES,
On top of the fiasco they didn't listen when I mentioned it FIVE TIMES I had a new flywheel and they added weight to the 427 flywheel to balance. I ended up taking my new motor to a friend, adding CSR electric water pump, Crane Roller Rockers, Edlelbrock race fuel pump, Moroso pan, MSD billet distributor, MSD 6AL, Billet Specialties Water neck, etc etc. I have an additional 2k in the new engine and it is ready to go. Although here I sit waiting for it to be bolted to the transmission (whole new story I don't have the strength to go down that road yet at this time).
Fast forward a couple months, I have the front and rear windows professionally removed for paint and I have another painter at work (I know, I am a slow learner!) start on the car in trade for some product from RB, this time it sits for three months and is moved to a new location, where it sits for another month, I had enough and told him to just finish the firewall (smoothed and filled all unused holes). For some reason he sand blasts away all my primer (I took it to 100% bare metal) and body filler and starts over. Do you have any idea what a pain in the ass it is to remove POUNDS of sand from the interior, underdash and every crevasse of a car? Imagine being on a beach, naked, buried in sand, get the idea?)
But I digress, he does a nice job and even goes all the way up and over the dash in a nice satin black..
12/2/07 Update:
The car is at Barton's in Alpha Illinois being painted, the journey to this point is laughable, or cryable depending on where you are sitting.
I am in need of two good 70-79 doors if you have some please email.
I just purchased two new fenders and rear cowl so I am sitting decent on metal.
4/12/08 Update: The car is progressing well, new fenders are primed and ready for paint, new door skins were installed, body is sanded and smooth ready for paint.
The clown that was working on my Engine and frame (Scott Canterbury) turned out to be an unbelievable dissapointment. Apparently this scout leader doesn't practice what he preaches (Dumbass put my electric water pump on upside down, scratch my frame and couldn't figure out how to put on a set of roller rockers). more on that later. The good news is the engine is being built by my friend Jamie, pics to follow.
I purchased a 78 for parts but it is too nice to cut uup, anyone want it? pony up $950.00 and its yours.

Here is a shot of the 70's Front end, I did a full on frame (ok subframe) removal, Bead blast, two stage paint.
This was my first attempt at welding/bodywork and it came out great (if I do say so myself)
I removed most of the factory welds on the top of the subframe, rewelded with a full solid bead, smoothed and filled pinholes with Rage Extreme body filler.
When I pulled the subframe out the mounting holes were rotted (common on a forty year old car, the water hits the rubber mounts and produces a sulfuric acid corrosive mixture) I had to weld in new metal at the four mounting points.
While I had this out I realized this ex drag racer had been punished with a big block for too many years and the subframe had moved, the right corner was 1/2" high and the ears of the A arms had moved in 1" (too many wheelies?) So what did this mean? Well just as luck would have it I had to shell out $300 bucks on a frame straighten from Lamberts in East Moline, the were quick and did a super job, it is now laser straight. Add on $70 bucks for blasting, a couple hundred in paint and I was seriously wondering if I wouldn't have been better off with a Chris Alston fab front end...
Paint is mid eighties color DuPont with a lot of metallic in it, I picked it out of a book at Automotive Finishes in Moline IL I think it will be a nice contrast to the sliver exterior and satin black firewall and inner fenders. The nitrous bottle is painted to match.
SSBC 43MM Dual Piston Aluminum brake calipers, Summit slotted disks, all bearing, seals and hardware were replace in the spindles. ($700 in calipers, disks, Earls braided lines, speed bleeders, bearings, etc)
Tubular upper and lower arms (Speed Tech Upper $540.00 and Air Ride Strong Arm lowers $380.00)
New everything, Edlelbrock full tie rod sleeves, Moog drag Links, Idler arm, Pitman, etc etc....
QA1 12 Position Aluminum coil over conversions, Energy Suspension boots.
I did however powder coat the spindles and motor mounts at work.
New manual steering box, Pitman arm (bend over $290.00 bucks for both!)
